Juris Doctor (JD) Law Degree

Grounded in Core Bar Courses

This California state accredited law program focuses on the knowledge and skills required to be an effective member of the legal profession. You choose the option best for you — a 4-year part-time program or the dedicated full-time program that can be completed in 2⅔ years.

Meets California State Bar Education Requirements

Purdue Global Law School is accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California. If you choose to take and pass the California bar exam, and you meet other state regulatory requirements, you’ll be ready to apply for admission to the State Bar of California.

Provides You Opportunities to Practice Outside of California

As a graduate of the Purdue Global JD program, you will be academically eligible to sit for the California, Connecticut, or — with an approved petition — Indiana bar exam. Upon receipt of a California, Connecticut, or Indiana law license, graduates may also apply to sit for the state bar in North Carolina and Wisconsin. Once you successfully pass a state’s bar exam, you can obtain a law license to practice in that state. Note: Purdue Global Law School cannot guarantee that any individual’s waiver petition will be granted.

To be accepted at Purdue Global Law School, you must satisfy all three steps in our application process, as well as meet the minimum academic standards outlined below.

Juris Doctor and Executive Juris Doctor Program: Applicants who earned their bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (such as the Distance Education Accrediting Commission) will be considered for admission to Purdue Global's law programs. In general, students should have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average from their undergraduate work.

The Juris Doctor (JD) program is designed for students who want to practice as an attorney: representing clients in court, providing legal counsel, preparing and delivering trial statements, leading depositions, negotiating settlements, and performing other traditional attorney functions. Due to Purdue Global's accreditation by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California, this degree program prepares you to sit for the California, Connecticut, or — with approved petition — Indiana bar exams exam and become a licensed attorney. Purdue Global’s JD degree consists of 92 credit hours and is available as a full-time or part-time program.

The Executive Juris Doctor (EJD) program is designed for professionals who want to add the advanced legal training of a lawyer, but who do not intend to practice law. The difference: you won’t have the additional regulatory hurdles of attorney licensure that include passing first year and bar exams, as well as postgraduation continuing education requirements. Because you’re not preparing for the bar, EJD degrees also require less class time and tuition than the JD program. Purdue Global’s part-time EJD program is 72 credit hours, taking just 3 years to complete.

During the first year, foundational courses are similar for both JD and EJD students. In subsequent years, the two degree programs take different paths. The JD student focuses primarily on traditional legal training and bar exam preparation. Students in the EJD program also continue building their advanced legal expertise, but with more freedom to customize their programs to more closely match a chosen industry or career path. Additionally, EJD students have more flexibility to take less than a full-time load.
